A four-week, summer high school preparation camps are held incoming ninth graders
identified as needing extra help transitioning to high school. The program includes
pre-algebra, writing and literature studies and real-world applications. One
day a week is devoted to special activities including trips to local industry
and colleges and job application and interview skills training. During the program,
students become familiar with high school staff and the facility. At end of the
program, students are assigned to the school graduation coach who will support
them and their families during the school year. Additionally each student is
matched with a mentor to work with them throughout the year. The camp experiences,
the graduation coach a school-year mentor, and familiarity with the high school
and its staff increase the chances of success for these students.
2007-08: Implemented at one high school, Berea High School and involved 19 participants.
