What You Can Do

Staying in school makes a difference

High school graduates make more money:

Graduates have a better chance of getting a good job:

  • The number of jobs requiring education beyond high school is growing twice as fast as jobs that offer on-the-job training.
  • A high school graduate in Greenville County is 30 percent more likely to be have a job than a dropout.

Graduates live safer and healthier lives:

  • Dropouts are three times more likely than graduates to be arrested and eight times as likely to be in jail or prison.
  • Dropouts, on average, die nine years sooner than graduates.
  • The average dropout is twice as likely to be poor.

What you can do:

  • Recognize that your child can do well in school. What matters most is how involved you are and how much support you give to staying in or returning to school.
  • Show your child school work is important to you. It’s as simple as asking “How was school today?” and doing it every day.
  • Listen. Letting your child express concerns will help resolve problems.
  • Talk about the importance of your values so your child can learn to make good decisions.
  • Talk to your child about avoiding drugs, alcohol and teen pregnancy.
  • Get to know your child’s friends.
  • Use community resources to keep your child safe and busy outside of school.
  • Visit your child’s school. The people there want to see you. Get to know your child’s guidance counselor. And call when needed.
